We have started other Did You Know Series, vegetable facts. Today we will talk about Corn facts. Corn, also known as Maize, is a cereal grain first domesticated by indigenous peoples in southern Mexico about 10,000 years ago. Maize has become a staple food in many parts of the world, with the total production of maize surpassing that of wheat or rice. However, little of this maize is consumed directly by humans: most is used for corn ethanol, animal feed, and other maize products, such as corn starch and corn syrup.   1. Corn is referred to as maize by most countries, this comes from the Spanish phrase ‘maize’.
  2. Corn is a cereal crop that is part of the grass family.
  3. An ear or cob of corn is actually part of the flower and an individual kernel is a seed.
  4. On common, an ear of corn has 800 kernels in sixteen rows.
  5. Corn will always have an even range of rows on every cob.
  6. A bushel is a unit of measure for volumes of dry commodities such as shelled corn kernels. 1 A bushel of corn is equal to eight gallons.
  7. With the exception of Antarctica, corn is produced on each and every continent in the world.
  8. There are over 3,500 exclusive uses for corn products.

  14. A place termed the “Corn Belt” in the US the place growing conditions are perfect includes the states of Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska, Minnesota, Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin, South Dakota, Michigan, Missouri, Kansas, and Kentucky.
  15. In the days of the early settlers to North, America corn was so precious that it was used as money and traded for different merchandise such as meat and furs.
  16. Corn is now a totally domesticated plant so you are not going to find it growing in the wild.
  17. Corn can be produced in a number shades including blackish, bluish-gray, purple, green, red, white, and the most frequent yellow.
